The World Around Us – Think Globally / Act Locally
Environmental studies – driving sustainability through the curriculum
All Sunrise School students study Environmental Studies as part of the curriculum. Our program combines the Sustainable Schools program
from Australia with other theme based units. Units include (but are not limited to) waste, pollution, water, recycling, energy and habitats.
We also offer environmentally-focused extra-curricular activities that focus on recycling/upcycling, such as fashion and art from waste.
As a school, we teach the values of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and ensure the students learn about how to sort and reduce their waste.
Many of the activities at school involve using recycled materials – including art activities, team challenges, garden projects and fashion shows.
ll classrooms and public areas of the school have 4 bins (paper/cardboard, metal/plastic, organic and waste) and we have a tetra pak collection program.
A gardening and permaculture program where children nurture and care for plants from planting seedlings to full harvest
Sunrise students begin learning about how to care for plants and living things from Small World (when they are 18 months old). We source our seeds from non GM sources whenever possible and grow most of our plants from seed.
The Sunrise School staff have all attended permaculture and gardening courses and we have many community links with organic farmers, environmental organisations and garden experts.
Fruits and vegetables grown in our gardens are harvested by the students and used in their cooking classes or in meals.
Beautiful natural gardens for integrated learning and play
Despite living in such a fertile and tropical area, it is hard to find schools in Bali that have the lush and beautiful gardens that Sunrise School enjoys.
Sunrise School boasts the first waste water garden in Bali (built in 2000), small ponds, a small stream and showcases vegetable gardens, kokedama (hanging plants), vertical gardens, 2 playing fields and large garden spaces for the children to play and learn in.
Hands-on community projects and outbound excursions for a local and global perspective
Our school motto is: Think Globally. Act Locally. Be Totally
We encourage all of our classes to get involved in community projects and excursions that increase awareness and mindfulness of the world around us and how we contribute to that. All of our excursions are either directly related to a unit of study or are designed to raise awareness of assist in community projects.
In line with our environmental focus, our students visit places such as the mangroves, the ROLE Foundation, ECO Bali, Temesi waste centre, and the electricity company.
Teaching children about care for living things and compassion, students may visit animal shelters, sanctuaries, orphanages and centres that assist people less fortunate.
We participate in community projects such as fundraising, repainting, cleaning, planting and awareness raising for various organisations.
We also invite guest speakers to the school to share with the students about their jobs, experiences, projects and ideas.
