“Is it Really Rubbish”

The beginning

The play “Is it Really Rubbish?” was conceived by the students of Sunrise School as a way to take a simple message out into the community about how easy it is to take care of the immediate environment through a few simple steps.

Originally the play was performed by the Grade One and Two students. They collaborated in creating the stage backdrops, the posters and the props as part of their Design Technology and Craft studies.

The play was performed to other local International Schools including The Montessori School, The Australian International School and the Canggu Community School.

The play drew attention from the Bali Hotels Association who then agreed to sponsor the costs of having the play perform to local schools associated with the members of the Bali Hotels Association for one year.

The play was then performed by a cross section of school students, a song was added and the students spoke in English and Indonesian.

“Is it Really Rubbish?” performed to local schools from Ubud to Tanjung Benoa, growing in size as it travelled from local school yards into hotel conference rooms and gardens.

New cast members joined from the Jodie O’Shea Orphanage in Denpasar, these children have an association with the Sunrise School through the schools Community Outreach Program. The advantage is that now we have two independent performing groups that can take the play all over Bali on request.

Today

The play has developed into a choreographed work with songs and activities that get audiences participating in the event.

School students play rubbish sorting relay games, take home colouring in posters and enjoy sharing a snack of lunch with the play performers. Two local NGO’s have created this event, pplh and IDEP, both organizations work in Indonesia to bring environmental awareness to local groups through education and training. Their collaboration with the Sunrise School has been wonderful and has added a very enjoyable dimension to the message of the play. With the larger audiences the play really reaches out to the audience as children learn the songs and sing along with the performers. The play will perform on World Clean Up Day as part of Bali’s Clean Up activities and will also perform at an education forum organised by pplh and in East Bali for local school students.

The Future

The future of the play looks bright, two troupes , two sets of stage props and two backdrops will mean the message can get further and more school children and their communities can be exposed to the simple message that if we clean up our own waste responsibly by re-using, recycling and reducing we can make our very own contribution to a cleaner planet.

The message is simple: check it out before you throw it out.

So many children seemed overwhelmed at the thought of and sight of mounting rubbish in their communities and were at a loss as to how THEY could make a difference when everything looks so big. With the play we broke down the problem into something you could fit in your hand and made the solution something that starts with a small step. We are seeing the results and many of the schools we have performed at have taken positive actions *Separating their school waste

*Using recycling services to take separated waste to the recycling centre

*Gaining an awareness for waste disposal that reaches the family and community

If you would like the play to perform in a school or community in Indonesia please contact us through this website.

If you are interested in developing the play for your own use outside of Indonesia please contact us and we can send you scripts and performance information.
